If we do not consider the environment and recycle and do not waste energy … It will get pretty bad and sooner than we expect so we would love to have young people like you thinking ahead about all these aspects and saving the planet and the environment!

Climate predictions have been made for 2050, 2070 and even 2100. The problem is that we can’t be precise or accurate – we can make some assumptions and have a go at estimating how bad it will get. Really it depends on what we do now!! If we take action before 2020 the outcome looks better (maybe only 2°C global warming). If we carry on business as usual it might be more like 3-4°C in UK and up to 9-10°C in some southern hemisphere countries. But don’t panic!! As Akram says we’re onto it, and we have future generations like you to help 🙂

Things really are pretty bad in my opinion though I am no expert. the problem is that, once things go badly wrong, they will take a very long time to sort out – possibly 100’s of years. Quite apart from some places getting very hot, others will get colder. This will mess up agriculture and therefore food production. The UK may actually get colder as we are kept warmer than we should be by the Gulf Stream, warm water that flows from the Atlantic. If that shuts off we will be like Sweden. The other big problem will be the sea level rising. Quite apart from having less room to live, most agricultural land is quite low lying so we will lose a high proportion of this – once again trouble. Sorry to be so gloomy. Fortunately, humanity still has time and the power to do something. Do we have the politcal will? It is up to everybody – you included – to make sure we do.
