It has got to be the cockroach. Creepy and horrible they may be but they can live almost anywhere – and can squeeze through the narrowest of gaps to get there. They can also eat more-or-less anything which is why they are such a pest. One favourite place for them to live is inside electronic equipment where it is warm. Cockroaches can even withstand exposure to nuclear radiation so might even survive an atomic war. Madagacsan cockroaches are about 6 inches long, squeak when annoyed and have a painful bite.

There is one animal adaptation that we can use to generate electricity in a smaller space…

Fish swim together in huge groups called shoals. One thing that can slow the swimming down is when the water is rough (or ‘turbulent’) and scientists worked out that the fish know how to arrange themselves in a pattern that quietens down the roughness or turbulence so that they can swim faster.

People who design wind turbines have used this pattern to help put more wind turbines in a smaller space … this might help to make more electricity without covering the whole countryside in wind turbines 🙂

@Laurence – yuk!! I hate those beasts!!!! @Akram – I had a ride on a camel last year – was great 🙂 For me – I think humans have done a pretty amazing job of adaptation – we just need to make sure we do it in a responsible way and leave resources for future generation to adapt…. 🙂
