• Question: who is your least favourite scientist?

      There were some really nasty experiments done on people by Nazi scientists in WW2 … I guess I’d have to say them.

      Fritz Haber. In your chemistry at school you will learn about the Haber process. It is a way of taking nitrogen from the atmosphere – a very, very unreactive molecule – and converting it into ammonia. The ammonia can then be used to make ammonium nitrate which is used as fertilizer. Good? Sure. But the real reason was that Germany wanted a process to make high explosives to use in World War I and had no access to the nitrate mines in South America. Not content with this, Haber also developed Zyklon B which was used to exterminate the Jews in the concentration camps in World War II. He was both a brilliant chemist and an extremely evil man.

      Sadly I agree with Jack and Laurence on this one – I went to Auschwitz last year and heard about the brutality of the Nazi regime in detail. I was sad, very sad …… but it is good to know about these things, then there is a greater chance that history will never repeat 🙂
