Your questions are interesting … starting with how and then followed by why? I like the way you think 🙂 I guess you have seen Jack and Laurence’s great answers here /energym12-zone/2012/03/how-was-the-sky-made

For me this is not exactly in my remits but I guess it is made because of the how it was created to provide a balance for our atmosphere and also not only for earth but could be the sky for other planets …

Sorry to say I don’t have a satisfying answer but I hope the others here would provide a great answer 😉

Because the earth is quite heavy .. so certain heavier gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen stick to it through the force of gravity.

Also, the earth is not too close to the Sun so the gases don’t get hot and ‘boil’ away.

In fact the earth’s position is ‘just right’ for us to have the sky, liquid water and to be able to support life .. so some people say we’re in the ‘goldilocks zone’ – our porridge isn’t too hot or too cold, it’s just right

I like the “Goldilocks Zone” idea … but we can’t play the analogy too far….didn’t the three bears return and frighten poor Goldilocks away?

I thought I had answered this one and Akram seems to have found my answer so I don’t know why I am here again……….

Perhaps the sky was made so we could get rained and snowed on?
